The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center (CC) Pharmacy Department is seeking a highly motivated Pharmacist in the IDCU to provide pharmaceutical care and research support for the patients and study participants enrolled in the NIH Intramural Research program in our 200-bed federal research hospital.
On the Bethesda, MD campus of the NIH, scientists and volunteer patients partner to create new medical innovations. The CC has been the leader in “bench-to-bedside” medicine and is the largest hospital in the world dedicated exclusively to research. About 1,600 clinical research studies are underway at the Clinical Center, including protocols focused on cancer, infectious diseases, blood disorders, heart disease, lung disease, alcoholism, and drug abuse. Many of these studies involve investigational products, which are managed by the IDCU.
The successful candidate for this position will be an exceptionally talented, knowledgeable, motivated, and proactive pharmacist with experience in managing clinical trials, supporting new drug development processes, and overseeing investigational drug management services in a hospital setting.
For this position, the highly desirable candidate will also have post-graduate residency training or clinical fellowship, board certification, and at least 3-5 years of hospital investigational drug pharmacy practice experience. The position is in the IDCU of the Pharmacy Department, CC.
As the Pharmacist for the IDCU, the candidate will be an expert on federal regulations and capable of interpreting regulatory guidelines, policies, and standards, including GCP, ICH, USP 797, and USP 800. They should also be well-versed in current investigational drug management guidelines and best practices with the ability to research investigational drug information and educate a multidisciplinary team.
The candidate must demonstrate a mastery of concepts and application of managing investigational drugs and clinical research, including design, conduct and implementation of clinical trials. Excellent communication skills along with advanced hands-on experience and knowledge in compounding sterile products and accurate medication dispensing are also required.
Our IDCU Pharmacists collaborate with clinical pharmacy specialists and pharmacy operations to facilitate the implementation of the NIH protocols through the Pharmacy Department. In addition, the IDCU Pharmacists share the responsibility for educating future pharmacists through didactic lectures and experiential precepting of students and residents.
Applicants must be licensed to practice pharmacy in a State, territory of the U.S., the District of Columbia, or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and have a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, or meet the minimum educational requirements as described in the vacancy announcement on USAJOBS. At the supervisor’s discretion, the position may offer telework. A newly appointed or reappointed employee may receive service credit for prior work experience or active-duty uniformed service that otherwise would not be creditable for the purpose of determining his or her annual leave accrual rate. All creditable service must be directly related to the duties of the position being filled and decisions to allow for such credit must be finalized prior to the selectee’s entrance on duty.
