The Oncology Clinical Specialist provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care to oncology patients to assure safe and effective drug therapy.  The Oncology Clinical Specialist will develop and maintain a clinical practice by participating in bedside clinical rounds in the adult oncology unit, serving as a resource to healthcare providers on issues related to oncology pharmacotherapy.  Collaborative relationships will be developed and fostered with nursing personnel and a private non-employed medical oncology group and an employed gynecologic oncology group.  Responsibilities also include relevant committee representation, staff education, and precepting pharmacy students. This position is directly involved in precepting an elective rotation for PGY1 pharmacy residents and PGY2 pharmacy residents.

Essential activities include:
•    Perform clinical review, entry, and modification of oncology treatment plans
•    Provide comprehensive patient-centered care by providing chemotherapy and ongoing disease education, counseling, and coordination of care with multiple care providers
•    Develop, review, assist and maintain, in collaboration with members of the Department of Oncology, various protocols and regimens within the oncology electronic system (Epic Beacon).
•    Develop clinical pharmacy practice to include but not limited to Adult Oncology, Outpatient Infusion Center, future Oncology Center practice, and Investigational Drug Service support of each practice site.
•    Design, support and implement policies to provide safe, effective, and efficient use of resources and ensure that budget, quality and value targets are met in collaboration with the Director of Clinical Pharmacy Services and Senior Director of Pharmacy.
•    Serve as a resource to healthcare providers on issues related to oncology/hematology pharmacotherapy
•    Participate in committees and routine meetings including but not limited to Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy and Therapeutics Subcommittee, Carilion System P&T Committee, Carilion Clinic Cancer Committee, Oncology Staff Meetings, and Tumor Conference.

Qualified candidates must be a graduate of a College of Pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and must possess a current Virginia pharmacist license or be eligible for licensure. An ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Practice Residency is required and specialized residency training in Oncology or equivalent experience is preferred.  Oncology board certification is preferred.  Applicants must possess good leadership, communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills. Must be able to effectively budget time, work efficiently and accurately, and follow procedures with minimum supervision. Excellent critical thinking and analytical skills are required.

Minimum Qualifications


Education: Must be a graduate of a College of Pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE).

Experience: ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Practice Residency required for all new hires or transfers as of August 1, 2011. Specialized residency training in respective patient care area is preferred.

Licensure, certification, and/or registration: License to practice Pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Virginia required within 90 days of hire. During the first 90 days of employment and the licensure application process, pharmacists without a valid license to practice pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Virginia may not perform duties restricted to a licensed pharmacist until the license is obtained. If the license is not obtained within 90 days of employment, the employee may be subject to separation from Carilion Clinic.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Must possess good leadership, communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills. Must be able to effectively budget time, work efficiently and accurately, and follow procedures with minimum supervision. Excellent critical thinking and analytical skills. Work requires knowledge of general office equipment and procedures including computer and keyboarding skills. All pharmacists must complete an Orientation Competency
