The Specialty Pharmacist assists the Director of Access Central and Specialty Pharmacy in the operation of Access Central Specialty Pharmacy located within the central fill facility. The Specialty department manages complex patients and their disease states by providing comprehensive clinical pharmacy services.

Salary ranges from $130,000 - $145,134, and can go higher for highly experienced candidates.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities/Duties

 

  • Coaches, mentors and trains direct report staff. Provides continuous performance management and conducts employee performance evaluations. Addresses performance and/or behavior issues, clarifying expectations and providing feedback.
  • Completes all Specialty pharmacy clinical evaluations and documents process in Therigy to optimize patient care.
  • Supports staff growth and development. Assesses the educational and experience needs of all levels of staff in collaboration with the individual. Encourages staff to seek educational opportunities incorporating job related training in addition to mandatory training.
  • Participates in the recruitment and selection of staff. Provides orientation to outline job requirements and expectations, policies and procedures, and proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Provides patient care services as assigned, which include but are not limited to:
    • Drug Utilization Review
    • Patient Counseling
    • Drug Regimen Review
    • Medication Therapy Management
    • Collaborative Drug Therapy Management or other post-diagnostic disease state management, pursuant to a valid agreement
    • Prescribe a drug or device, as authorized by statute according to Drug Therapy Management Protocols
    • Orders, interprets and monitors laboratory tests
    • Receipt or transfer of a prescription
  • Ensures all prescriptions, prescription refills, and drug orders are correctly dispensed according to the prescribing provider's authorization and YVFWC policies and procedures.
  • Ensures the security of the pharmacy area including the provision of adequate safeguards against theft or diversion of prescription drugs.
  • Ensures that all records and inventories are maintained in accordance with state and federal laws.
  • Provides direct oversight to Central Fill Pharmacy Technicians and Specialty Pharmacy Technicians according to their job specific utilization plan.
  • Ensures medication related incidents are thoroughly reported to the Quality Assurance (QA) department in a timely manner. Reviews QA reports received and communicates results to staff, ensuring implementation of the required site/process/safety adjustments identified in the reports. Assesses and implements opportunities for process improvement.
  • Ensures that the standard of pharmacy practice consistently meets or exceeds legal and professional Standards of Care. Complies with state and federal drug laws as regulated by the State Board of Pharmacy, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Food and Drug Administration, URAC and ACHC accrediting bodies for Specialty pharmacy.
  • Uses sound fiscal and pharmaceutical practices to determine the minimum level of inventory needed. Monitors adherence to established inventory process. Conducts periodic inspections of medication storage areas to check expired medications and storage conditions.
  • Monitors prescription dispensing operation. Works with the Central Fill Maintenance Supervisor and Central Fill Pharmacist to troubleshoot and provide maintenance on the High Volume Robotic Dispensing System robots, dispensers, canisters, collator, conveyers, cap and vial delivery system, and other technical components essential to production.
  • Provides in-service training for pharmacy and clinic personnel as it relates to pharmacy operations, in accordance with state regulations and program objectives.
  • Maintains active licensure and pharmacological knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing professional networks, and/or participating in professional societies.
  • Performs clinical responsibilities in alignment with The Joint Commission (TJC), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and YVFWC requirements.


Qualifications
 

  • Education: Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy or Pharm D Preferred Degree.
  • Experience: Two years' experience working in a dispensing role in a community or retail pharmacy. This includes one year's experience supervising a team in a clinical environment. Experience with inventory and cost management activities preferred.
  • Licenses/Certificates/Registration: Current Washington State Pharmacist's license.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required: Knowledge of ordering and inventory control. Knowledge of cost management. Knowledge of community pharmacy practice. Specialty Drugs, and Central Fill high volume mail order pharmacy. Current knowledge of State and Federal Pharmacy Laws. Knowledge of U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Health Regulations and the uses and effects of medications. Thorough understanding of dosage administration and measurement, chemical compounds and medical brands. Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to successfully manage, coach and train staff for sustained performance. Effective verbal and listening communication skills with a customer-oriented approach. Ability to prioritize work and handle a variety of tasks simultaneously, with frequent interruptions. Proficiency with a variety of computer programs including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel. Proficiency in one or more software systems such as Electronic Medical Record (EMR), Pharmacy Management, automated filling and/or Patient Communications Systems preferred. Ability to be credentialed and remain credentialed as a provider through the YVFWC credentialing committee or other means as determined appropriate by Sr. Pharmacy Leadership.
