JOB SUMMARY

The BMT Clinical Pharmacist Specialist is an essential member the multidisciplinary Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) program at UT Southwestern (UTSW) Medical Center’s Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center, the only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center in North Texas and one of just five in the entire Southwest. This Clinical Pharmacist Specialist will support this highly specialized BMT program in both an inpatient (hospital) and an outpatient (ambulatory clinic) setting. This position’s responsibilities include being scheduled rotating weekend shifts on the BMT Unit in Williams P. Clements Jr. University Hospital (CUH) and the occasionally to travel to the Simmons Cancer Center’s satellite clinics in the DFW area to support the program.

The BMT clinical pharmacist specialist responsibilities include:

  • Manages clinical activities, priorities, and problems, pharmacist staffing and workloads.
  • Provides status report to pharmacy management effectively communicating issues, concerns, and suggestions as appropriate.
  • Manages and develops clinical initiatives and determines therapeutic alternatives when drug shortages are identified and communicates with medical staff leadership and key stakeholders.
  • Assists with budget preparation and daily financial activity specifically in relation to high cost drugs.

  • Assists the Director and Assistant Vice President of Pharmacy with meeting administrative goals and objectives.

This is a full-time, benefit-eligible position that will be scheduled primary days and inpatient holiday and weekend rotation at the William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital (CUH) Inpatient Pharmacy on the UT Southwestern (UTSW) Medical Center campus in Dallas.  

 

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

EXPERIENCE:

Must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Completion of both PGY1 and PGY2 in Pharmacy Oncology from an ASHP-accredited residency program; OR •
  • Completion of PGY1 from an ASHP-accredited residency program and 5 years as a pharmacist in a progressive clinical practice in oncology; OR
  • 8 years as a pharmacist in a progressive clinical practice in oncology.

Previous experience as a clinical pharmacist in Hematology-Oncology & Bone Marrow Transplant is strongly desired.

EDUCATION: 

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy is required. 
  • Completion of ASHP-accredited PGY-1 and PGY-2 in Oncology Pharmacy Residency Programs is preferred.

CREDENTIALS: 

Must possess all the following licenses and/or certifications: 

  • Registered as a Licensed Pharmacist by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP);
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification with course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA).

BPS board certification in oncology pharmacy is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES: 

  • Working knowledge of computers and data-entry skills are essential.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English (speaking, reading, and writing) is required.
  • Good general health and a strong ability to cope with stress in a faced-paced environment is a must.
  • Position requires moderate physical effort: prolonged standing/walking, occasional lifting/carrying (up to 25 lbs), reaching, bending, crouching, etc.

 

JOB DUTIES

  1. Performs job responsibilities in accordance with organizational and departmental policies and procedures, performance improvement objectives and environmental/infection control standards. Develops/implements process to meet/comply with JCAHO and regulatory requirements.
  2. Coordinates staff training, competencies, certification and continued education specific to specialty. Assists clinical staff pharmacists with therapeutic monitoring, patient assessments, interpretation of lab values, TPN assessment and pharmacokinetic calculations. Identify opportunities for process improvements, develops and implements policy and procedures for prompt, safe and efficient patient care.
  3. Actively promotes pharmacy. Coordinates and participates in multidisciplinary in-services/meetings, publishes articles (i.e. staff newsletter), individualized drug information, rounds, consults, etc. Maintains high visibility/availability through participation in in-services, meetings and daily activities. Participates in the education/experiential training of pharmacy students and pharmacy residents.
  4. Actively manage P&T initiatives through monitoring of documented interventions. Verifies data, develops measures and reports outcomes (Performance Improvement). Supports cost savings initiatives. Has active role in assessment and selection of cost-effective pharmaceuticals. Reviews formulary addition request and develops monographs for presentation. Manage the formulary system and procedures for acquisition of non-formulary product.
  5. Consistently works and problem solves independently and effectively. Takes charge when necessary and is looked to for direction. Makes the right decisions and uses good judgment. Cross trained and multifunctional maintaining competency in multiple areas.
  6. Mentors clinical staff pharmacists and supportive personnel. Delegates appropriate/reasonable tasks and evaluates performance. Represents Pharmacy Department at P&T Committee and Service Line Meetings.
  7. Performs computer order entry in an accurate, thorough and timely manner. Reviews/updates medication profiles (therapies, allergies, height, weight, etc.) and is cognizant of patient charges. Reviews medication orders for therapeutic appropriateness, duplications, interactions, overall effectiveness and safety. Seeks clarification if necessary and documents interventions (i.e. ADRs).
  8.  Actively enhances personal growth and development by participating in educational programs, literature searches, in-services and meetings. Actively participates in new employee orientation and training and evaluations.
  9. Duties performed may include one or more of the following core functions: a) Directly interacting with or caring for patients; b) Directly interacting with or caring for human-subjects research participants; c) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting patient records (including patient financial records); or d) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting human-subjects research records.
  10. Takes ownership in solving problems effectively, efficiently and to the satisfaction of the patient
  11. Presents constructive feedback regarding system or process failures and participates in resolution in a proactive and positive manner.
  12. Maintains patient confidentiality in accordance with University Medical Center policy.
  13. Consistently maintains control of feelings, emotions and body language.
  14. Demonstrates through verbal and non-verbal communications openness to change or new ideas. Willingly learns and adapts to changes in work environment and new work methods as introduced. Demonstrates flexibility to fluctuating workload and effectively prioritizes assignments.
  15. Exhibits a positive attitude in support of the hospital and management, including decisions made by administration and/or management. Treats hospital resources and property with respect and in a manner that reflects awareness of financial responsibility.
  16. Adheres to all policies and procedures related to safety, infection control, and corporate compliance. Including personal demeanor, appearance, and hygiene that are appropriate for the work environment.
  17. Responds to all reasonable requests in an appropriate and timely manner and communicates in a concise and positive manner.
  18. Tolerates diversity within the work environment and consistently deals with all customers in a respectful manner.
  19. Supports teamwork and cooperation with co-workers in daily activities. Readily volunteers assistance to help co-workers complete tasks.
