Job Summary
The purpose of this position is to provide an expert level consultation to the pharmacy, medical and nursing staff in the area of cardiology services. The Pharmacy Specialist, Cardiology Services will perform the following functions:

  • Collaborates with Cardiology providers and other professionals to run cardiology disease medication management programs
  • Assist in direct supervision of pharmacy technician(s)
  • Develops intervention strategies to optimize medication utilization, including but not limited to disease specific guidelines, clinical pathways, restricted use criteria, and policy development.
  • Provides collaborative pharmaceutical care with staff pharmacists to patients receiving cardiology therapy.
  • Establishes a means to report and monitor ongoing medication management utilization with the Cardiology Practice/Services.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement regarding cardiology specific medication use, including but not limited to performing medication use evaluations and conducting prospective audits.
  • Provides ongoing education to pharmacists, providers, and other disciplines throughout UCSF Health.
  • Works closely with the Cardiology Department and participates in their daily huddles, grand rounds, and staff meetings.
  • Performs formulary evaluation for the Cardiology Services/Department.
  • Participates in Quality Assurance and Improvement for pharmacy managed direct patient care services
  • Provides appropriate documentation of all activities
  • Presents at local and national meetings and publishes in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Precepts residents and students in a cardiology rotation. May serves as the PGY2 Residency Program Director or Coordinator.
  • Evaluates medication error reduction strategies related to the Cardiology Practice/Service.
  • Serves as the pharmacy department liaison with the Cardiology Practice/Service in the Outpatient Setting Only.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform competencies as outlined in Pharmacy Competency Assessment tools.
  • Serves on committees for the clinic as directed by the aCPO, Ambulatory Care Services or designee.


Specifically, it requires a close and effective working relationship with other departments in the medical center as well as with the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and the School of Pharmacy.

Today, the department continues to lead the profession through the integration of advanced technology & robotics, comprehensive pharmaceutical care and clinical services.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (PharmD)
  • PGY1 Pharmacy Residency, or equivalent experience
  • Three (3) years of experience as a licensed pharmacist in a pharmacy experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrates subject matter knowledge of pharmaceutical theory and industry best practices in optimizing the use of medication to treat patients. Stays updated on pharmacy regulations and developments in research and design. Ability to apply principles from an acute care setting to primarily an ambulatory care setting.
  • Knowledge of relevant Pharmacy Department, medical center, and UC policies and protocols including medicine storage, safety, and patient privacy and treatment. Deep knowledge of all relevant pharmacy federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Advanced technical skills to compound, prepare, mix, and manufacture sophisticated or rare medicines in specialty area. Ability to work carefully, methodically and accurately.
  • Highly developed project management skills to manage multiple priorities, lead research projects from inception to completion on schedule, and deliver responsive customer service to patients. Demonstrates adaptability and flexibility, anticipates and effectively handles change.
  • Sharp analytical skills and scientific aptitude. Critical thinking skills to challenge conventional practices and apply knowledge to recommend innovative, industry leading improvements.
  • Interpersonal skills to maintain relationships with healthcare professionals on patient care team, researchers, and pharmacy department and develop relationships with industry leaders. Interpersonal skills to address sensitive patient situations with a caring and sympathetic manner.
  • Highly skilled critical thinker with strong analytical abilities to identify problems before they arise and solve complex, wide reaching problems when no precedent exists.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with patient treatment team. Advanced verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant information systems
  • Ability to listen actively to clinical staff and patients, understanding varying viewpoints and receiving feedback. Verbal and written communication skills to tactfully articulate reasoning behind own opinions and change the thinking of, or gain acceptance from others.
  • Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in clinical documentation applications and pharmacy database technology and train others to effectively use applications.
  • Experience speaking in front of large interdisciplinary groups at the local and national level.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PGY2 Residency Training in Ambulatory Care with an emphasis in Cardiology, or equivalent experience with in emphasis in Cardiology
  • Advanced Practice Pharmacist
  • Advanced Certification with emphasis in Cardiology Pharmacy (e.g BCPS, BCCP, BCACP, CDE)

License/Certification

  • Registered Pharmacist in the State of California
  • Basic Life Support from the AHA
