Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center (AHWFBMC) is currently searching for motivated candidates for a Clinical Pharmacist in Pain Management and Opioid Stewardship. This position is an integral part of a large pharmacy team and progressive group of pharmacy leaders who provide comprehensive pharmacy services throughout the medical center. Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist (AHWFB) is a pre-eminent academic health system based in Winston-Salem, NC and part of Atrium Health Enterprise. Over 350 administrators, pharmacists, and technicians provide comprehensive pharmacy services spanning the continuum of care across multiple patient populations. AHWFBMC has a long history of clinical excellence and innovation in pharmacy practice. Today, the department provides service based clinical services to more than 47 inpatient services and a variety of ambulatory clinics. Pharmacists and technicians partner to ensure safe transitions of care during patient admission and discharge and assist patients in accessing pharmaceutical care. In the ambulatory setting the Department of Pharmacy has community and specialty outpatient services as well as home infusion. Graduate Pharmacy Education consists of nine ASHP accredited residency programs, an internship program, and learning experiences for four schools of pharmacy in North Carolina.
The Clinical Pharmacist in Pain Management and Opioid Stewardship is responsible for:
- Providing engagement in the oversight of pain management supporting safe and effective practice and sustainable improvements across the various disciplines and departments involved in pain assessment, pain management and opioid prescribing
- Reviewing performance improvement data to improve the overall safety and quality of care for patients
- Assessing and implementing mitigation strategies regarding naloxone administration in the inpatient setting
- Providing continuing education, in-services, and pharmacotherapy management assistance to pharmacy, physicians, and nursing colleagues
- Contributing to pain management order set creation and revisions
- Serving as a resource for regulatory and safety items to include closure of identified gaps or opportunities for improvement
This pharmacist will participate in the following activities:
- Provide direct patient care through rounding services with the Pain Management team on consulted patients
- Participating in patient education for complex pain management plans
- Serving as a pharmacotherapy expert for the multidisciplinary team
- Work closely with key stakeholders and leaders in pharmacy and other areas
- External presentations, publications, and professional speaking is strongly encouraged and supported
- As faculty within the Graduate Pharmacy Education program, he/she will serve as a preceptor for the Pharmacy Residency Programs.
- Provides experiential mentorship for Doctor of Pharmacy students
In short, the Pain Management and Opioid Stewardship pharmacist will facilitate medication therapy and pharmacy services to this specialized patient population and provide expertise in the development of programs and regulatory standards.
Position requirements include:
1. Education: Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE accredited College of Pharmacy
2. Clinical training and experience: Completion of PGY1 Pharmacy residency and PGY2 Residency Pain Management and Palliative Care is preferred (or 2-4 years of clinical experience in acute care patient populations may be considered in lieu of formal training and exceptional aptitude or knowledge may be considered in lieu of experience).
3. Licensure/certifications: Licensed or eligible for licensure to practice pharmacy in the state of North Carolina required, Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) certification preferred
