A Day in the Life of a Postgraduate Trainee: Reflections from the 2024 ACCP Annual Meeting

First-Time Attendee

The 2024 Annual Meeting in Phoenix was the first ACCP meeting I have had the pleasure to attend. When I compare it with other pharmacy conferences I have participated in, ACCP stood out from the crowd in several ways. The programming was all very useful and well thought out. When reviewing the schedule of educational sessions prepared each day, it was difficult to choose just one in each time slot to attend! I left feeling more prepared to handle both clinical and non-clinical situations as I continue through residency.

Another impactful takeaway from the Annual Meeting were the multiple opportunities for networking. ACCP has a noticeable “tight-knit” relationship between all members, and I was able to expand my network so easily. Through the Practice and Research Networks (PRNs), I was able to gain mentorship and insight as well as make connections I know will serve me well in the future. Overall, the close relationship of members allowed me to easily initiate networking, and I felt comfortable stepping in to conversations with anyone around me. This was unique compared with other conferences, and I look forward to the benefit ACCP will bring through the remainder of my career.

Returning PGY1 Attendee

Attending the ACCP Annual Meeting as a returning PGY1 resident was a unique and enriching experience compared with my time as a student. This year, I approached the showcase with a focused goal of exploring PGY2 residency opportunities, specifically those that aligned with my interests. Coming back as a member of the Resident Advisory Committee, I had the privilege of participating in the Resident Roundtable during the Emerge from the Crowd program, which allowed me to share insights and engage with peers on a different level. In addition, being involved in PRN committees made networking smoother because I could connect more easily with other professionals in a collaborative setting. As a returning resident, I was also able to provide insights into the residency search and application process to students, offering guidance based on my own experiences. I found the educational sessions far more beneficial this time around, especially those directly relevant to my current practice in ambulatory care. I attended sessions on diabetes, heart failure, transitions of care, and the 340B program, all of which are integral to my training site, enhancing my professional development and practice readiness. These experiences truly highlighted the growth I’ve experienced since my time as a student, transitioning from learning and observing to active participation and leadership.

Returning PGY2 Attendee

As a PGY2 pharmacy resident at the ACCP 2024 Annual Meeting, I had an exceptional experience that contributed greatly to both my professional growth and my future career plans. The PRN meetings were a highlight, as they facilitated a great networking opportunity, allowing me to share insights and learn from leaders in my area of practice. During these sessions, I had the unique opportunity to network with students, residents, and clinical specialists from all over the nation. These interactions allowed me to exchange ideas, discuss emerging trends in pharmacy practice and residency training, and gain perspectives from various health care settings on acute issues like the IV fluid shortage. The collaborative atmosphere fostered by the PRN sessions created a supportive environment where I could connect with peers and seasoned professionals, expanding my professional network and building lasting relationships. These interactions also fueled my passion to continue to serve in this organization as the leaders of the PRN shared the latest research and accomplishments of Internal Medicine clinical specialists in different institutions.

The Professional Placement Forum was invaluable for career advancement, providing direct access to prospective employers. It was an excellent platform to explore potential job placements and discuss details of potential job opportunities with employers in person. This feature of the conference is a great in-person extension of the ACCP Career Center that allows residents to meet and network with potential employers. Overall, this combination of education, networking, and career exploration truly made this event a pivotal moment in my residency journey.
